A Picture Says A 1000 Words
Many of you have written about your want or I should say need to bring a camera to document your experience if you were ever to go into hiding, while others have mentioned the need to bring photographs to help you nurture your memories and keep them alive.
A photograph can be a powerful tool to help us stay connected with the emotions we would rather not let go. They can offer us comfort and peace. They often remind us of the people and places we love, and sometimes simply looking at an old photograph can make us smile or bring tears to our eyes.
Photographs can also be jarring. Sometimes they present us with emotions we are not sure how to handle; after all they freeze time indiscriminately. It is important to remember that photographs should not be looked upon lightly. They demand our full attention.
For the duration of the time we read Anne’s diary, I hope that you will really look at the photographs of the war. Try and imagine the lives behind each image. Think back to the albums you carry, whether on your phones, computers, or traditional albums. Think of the story each of your images tells. Think of the laughter or tears and events each one captures. Then as you look at the photographs throughout this unit, remember that each person depicted carries similar stories, and longings, and loves. I hope that you can see the power of the images and emotions represented in each photograph.
In order to help you connect with the events of the book and with Anne in particular, take a look at this short video. Please comment on how this montage made you feel after you are done. We will be creating a similar photo-essay on iMovie and posting them on YouTube in the near future. So think about which images of the war you would like to use, the music that best sets the mood, and the story you would like to tell.
Allow the video to fully load for best viewing.

I liked the video but it’s very sad! It really shows the pictures were a thousand words. I like when they showed as she grows up, how her life totally changed from wealthy to normal. Thanks for having the video!Really glad to see it!

Amazing video…but you say that pictures can mean a thousand words?
I disagree. It is the music from Titanic that actually adds that element of sorrow, of things past into those pictures.
When I tried watching it without the music, all that left. Perhaps a picture can say 1000 words, but music can whisper a million: for that is how many it would take to describe such a complicated thing as an emotion.
Aron is right there are many factors that render a piece of art emotional powerful, and music is often the key ingredient; please keep this in mind as you think about the video montage you will be producing soon.
Perhaps a picture can say 1000 words, but music can whisper a million.
Beautifully said!
very sad! I liked it though, but i was also wondering if you can tell me how to add a video like that.
Whoa, those pictures really inspired me and i do agree with Aron the music does add alot and it makes the entire video ten times sadder than it would be with only the pictures displaying the emotion.
Ryan has a good question that i wanto know too, how can you add a video like that?
Patience everyone. We will get to the video soon. You just worry about the writing for now.
These pictures are really profound and make me sad in a way that I can read about this girls like I know so much about her, and then see her family go by, knowing they have died. It’s hard to say something about this slideshow.
Mr.R, that was a very touching video. I mean, there they are – the happy family, who had their times of pleasure, then their times of pain…and then suddenly! The level of pain that they could have never imagined to have come is here. And they put up with it. Anne Frank’s middle name should be courage.
I disagree with Aron. True, the music does add a touch of sadness. The music could be the key to that miserable feeling. But, what he said about watching the video without the music seemed exaggerated. Of course the feeling of sadness stays with or without the music. It’s those pictures, the history and one brave woman that makes the whole video.
Yet, I liked the way you said that pictures can say a thousand words while music whispers a million.
Well said!
Sai.
Sai,
I maintain what I said earlier. When I watched the without the music, so much of the meaning was lost. You are arguing against yourself, saying both that I am right and that I am not. Well perhaps it does not matter, but nonetheless you will someday understand how much more Music can do than pictures. The titanic song, alone, is a tale of courage, of battle against evil, of sorrow, of love. Alone, the pictures mean nothing. Just a meaningless series of pictures about a family. When we understand that family, it gains importance, but the Music remains and it still has its own aura
Aron,
You might want to re-read what I wrote.I am not arguing with myself — all I’m saying is that yes, music is very sad, but hey, all you’re saying is that the pictures dont matter at all. We could be watching Disney pictures with Titanic music and get all sad then. Right? The pictures are the main reason why the whle video was made.Still, I respect your ideas, only disagree. Also,I think you are an amazing writer. But, in this case pictures do speak a thousand words.
It is amazing how much emotion a picture and some audio can convey. I wonder which is more powerful: writing or images? I am already looking forward to this iMovie project!
Mr.R, are we allowed to “download” the movie that you made? I clicked on Share that was at the bottom and it took me to a place where I can e-mail the video, but I wasn’t sure if it was safe or not, so I decided to ask.
Sai :]
I actually didn’t make this video. I found it on YouTube, and yes I think it is safe to download it. Use it for ideas for your project if you like, but try and be original
